At A Glance
Federal Medical Centre, Nguru was established in 1998 following a formal agreement between the Yobe State Government and the Federal Ministry of Health. The institution’s origins, however, date back to 1954, when the original facility was constructed by the Western Sudan Mission. At the time, it comprised only two wards—male and female medical wards. The facility was subsequently taken over by the then Borno State Government, and later by Yobe State, before attaining Federal status in 1998 and commencing full operations in 1999.
At inception as a Federal institution, the Centre had modest infrastructure, including two wards, two outpatient clinics, an administrative block, a mortuary, an X-ray unit, a pharmacy store, and four blocks of staff quarters. Over the years, significant investments were made in additional facilities and infrastructure to enable the Centre effectively discharge its mandate as a tertiary healthcare institution.
The growing demand for services and the need for further expansion eventually necessitated relocation to a permanent site. Construction of the new facility spanned six years and was officially commissioned on 13 December 2012 by the current Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, who was the Honourable Minister of Health at the time.
The Federal Medical Centre, Nguru as it exists today is the product of the collective vision, dedication, and sacrifices of successive administrations, notably those of Dr. Garba K. Dagauda, Professor Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad Musa, and the current Medical Director, Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman.
